I’m Tony, the maker behind Copper Poppa, based in Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty.

Creativity came along a little later in life for me. After years working as a plumber, I discovered a real enjoyment in making things and finding new ways to turn something old into something different. What started out at local markets has grown into a regular fixture at markets and events throughout the Bay of Plenty and surrounding regions.

Copper is at the heart of what I do, particularly recycled copper from old hot water cylinders. I enjoy giving these materials a second life, embracing their natural colours, textures and patina. My creations range from practical pieces for the home and garden through to sculptural, decorative and quirky one-offs. Some have a purpose, others are simply there to make you smile or catch your eye.

I’m completely self-taught, learning through experimenting, making mistakes and figuring things out along the way. My plumbing background gives me the practical skills, but the creative side has been a journey of its own.

Most days you’ll find me tinkering away in my lock-up studio and man cave on MacDonald Street, Mount Maunganui. I regularly hold open days, so people can pop in, have a look around and see what I’m working on. The Home Show has been a particularly successful event for Copper Poppa, and the Bay of Plenty Garden & Art Festival is always a favourite on the calendar.

I enjoy commissions, one-off creations, and coming up with something a little different. You can find my work at local markets and events or online at copperpoppa.nz.

I’m best reached by phone on 027 383 6199. I’m still getting the hang of keeping up with social media messages, so a phone call is always your best bet!
