TAURANGA CITY COUNCIL
Tauranga City Council is committed to supporting innovative and resilient communities through its Community Development Match Fund, and to fostering our vibrant events environment through the Event Funding Framework.
Community Development Match Fund
The Community Development Match Fund helps groups deliver neighbourhood projects that help build strong, innovative and vibrant communities. Small Match Fund Grants of up to $1000 can be applied for at any time, and Medium Match Fund grants (up to $10,000) are considered twice per year.
Event Funding Framework
- The purpose of our Event Funding Framework is to provide financial support to events that champion our event funding ‘values’ and meet at least one of our funding ‘priorities’.
- We manage four funds within the Framework:
- Community Event Fund – maximum $5,000 grant
- Event Support Fund – maximum $15,000 grant
- Legacy Event Fund – maximum $50,000 grant
- Major Event Fund – no maximum limit, but within the parameters of the allocated budget for this fund
Applications for the Community Event Fund and Event Support Fund are considered on a monthly basis, whilst Legacy Event Fund applications are considered twice a year, and four times a year for the Major Event Fund.
WESTERN BAY OF PLENTY DISTRICT COUNCIL
Community Matching Fund
Council makes up to $140,000 available for community and environmental projects that make a positive difference in the District.
The matching fund initiative was established to support projects led by not-for-profit community groups working for the benefit of their communities.
Council recognises that these groups contribute numerous resources to projects and seeks to “match” the dollar value of this community effort with a grant.
Funding is made of two components – a General fund for social, recreational and cultural initiatives and an Environmental fund for projects associated with the natural environment.
- The General fund has a pool of $100,000
- The Environmental fund has a pool of $40,000
Community Board Grants
The Te Puke and Maketu community boards allocate grants on an ad hoc basis throughout the year when applications are received.
The Waihi Beach, Omokoroa and Katikati community boards allocate grants annually in April/May.
CREATIVE NEW ZEALAND
Arts Grants offer short-term project funding for New Zealand artists, arts practitioners and arts organisations. This funding enables more sustainable careers, encourages innovation and the development of arts practice, and provides opportunities for diverse communities to access the arts.
Please check the CNZ website for funding cut-off dates as they differ for each funding type.
Also be aware there is a tiered process for applying for CNZ funding. It is recommended you apply for the most easily accessible CCS funding first and then develop your applications as a next step process as your event/project/business grows. It is unlikely CNZ will fund first time or undeveloped projects.
ETHNIC COMMUNITIES DEVELOPMENT FUNDING
There is $4.2 million a year available through the Ethnic Communities Development Fund. The fund is available for projects that support ethnic communities to grow their skills, celebrate their culture and take part in society.

Who can apply
Any group can apply if your project supports ethnic communities in New Zealand.
Their efinition of ethnic communities includes migrants, former refugees, long-term settlers, and those born in New Zealand who identify their ethnicity as:
- Continental European
- Latin American
- Middle Eastern
Groups with legal status (includes trusts and incorporated societies) can apply for over $10,000. Groups without legal status can apply for up to $10,000.
Acorn Foundation is a charitable trust operating in Tauranga, New Zealand. It was established in 2003, to encourage people to consider leaving a gift in their will to benefit the western Bay of Plenty community forever. People can also make gifts during their lifetime to build up their fund and maximise the tax rebates now available.
The Acorn Foundation is based on a model established in New York in the 1920’s. The Foundation manages funds on behalf of its donors. The investment income earned is distributed annually to charities chosen by our donors or donors may choose to leave the distributions to the Trustees discretion.

BayTrustBayTrust will consider grants for organisations and projects which significantly help build, strengthen or enhance Bay of Plenty Communities.
Projects and organisations should help achieve the Trust’s Strategic Outcome areas including: Active Communities, Healthy Communities, Education, Cultural Heritage, Community Economic Development.
A high priority for funding is directed towards:
– Organisations or projects addressing identified areas of need in a community
– Organisations with significant volunteer (unpaid) assistance
– Important projects where BayTrust funding may act as a lever in attracting additional funding.
Two main arts-related funding options:
– Community Support and Event Funding up to $15,000 – monthly funding for applications under $5,000, and quarterly for those up to $15,000. A scholarship is also available.
– Community Impact Funding between $15,000 – $100,000 – a quarterly funding process.
In 2007, Tauranga identity Gregory Brownless (owner of Woodhill and Tauranga Park Funeral Homes), made a decision that would change his life and the lives of others in the community around him.
Driven by a longstanding desire to give something back to the people who had given him so much, and convinced that there were others who wanted to make a similar lasting gesture, Greg decided to literally give his business to the community. And so, Legacy Funerals and the Legacy Trust officially came to be.
Legacy Trust applications are reviewed twice per annum. Please read the trust policies on distribution before submitting your application, so that you are comfortable that your application will meet our criteria.
Note that your application needs to be received no later than 31 January (for distributions in March) and 30 August for (distributions in October). There is no formal process for funding, recommendations come from both supporters of the Legacy concept and known community needs.

TECT recommend you contact their office to discuss your project before completing the application form. Please ensure applications are submitted at least 3 months prior to final date you require a decision.
THE TODD FOUNDATION GENERAL FUND
Responsive, 1 or 2 year grants for community organisations or social enterprises. To be eligible your project or initiative must contribute to one of our goals:
Support for families and communities to provide safe and nurturing environments for children
Assistance for children and families to participate actively in learning, particularly in the early years
Help for young people to develop their potential and contribute fully in the community.

NZ On Air acts to ensure New Zealanders can experience public media that is authentically New Zealand.
We are an independent government funding agency delivering quality and diverse New Zealand public media.
The public media we invest in will enrich the New Zealand cultural experience and strengthen community life, improve the diversity of available content, be accessible and promote informed debate. It may entertain and it will add cultural value.
Funded content can be found on television, online and on radio. We aim to strike a balance of content for both general and targeted audiences.
